Ruperra Conservation Trust was formed in 1996 with the aim of raising money to purchase and conserve Ruperra Castle, a Scheduled Ancient Monument and Grade II* Listed Building, ruined by fire in 1941.
Although funding was received from Cadw and the Architectural Heritage Fund for a feasibility study in 1997, the Castle, its outbuildings and 17 acres surrounding it were sold to a private owner in 1998.

Two years later, the Trust was able to  purchase Coed Craig Ruperra, a 150 acre woodland to the north of the castle and once part of the Ruperra estate, with funding from the Esmée Fairbairn Trust, the Countryside Council for Wales, Caerphilly County Borough Council, Cadw and many other trusts and private donors.
Information on funding is listed on interpretation boards on site and on the 'Links' page on this website.

A word about the Trusts, which confuses many people. The Local History group set up Ruperra Castle Conservation Trust up in 1996 to rescue Ruperra Castle. No sooner was the Feasibility study completed than Mr BaraKat bought the Castle. In 2000 we bought Coed Craig Ruperra, but because we had to change our constitution to achieve this, the Charity Commission advised dropping the word Castle. and we became Ruperra Conservation Trust. By 2008 a great deal of political activity became necessary so some of us set up Ruperra Castle Preservation Trust and left the care of the birds, animals and trees to RCT. Two of us are trustees of both and both trusts areconcerned about the preservation of the built and natural landscape .

  1. We urge Welsh Government to include this  within the National Development Framework, and will make representations for it to be identified in the forthcoming Strategic Development Plan for the Capital City Region.  Green Belt designation would  protect this key area, at the meeting point between the 3 Counties, for future generations.
  2. We envisage the Ruperra Green Belt extending to cover the major part of Caerphilly Mountain, so that it would protect this outstanding recreational and landscape arc from inappropriate development.  Such an extensive  Green Belt would provide an effective counter-balance to more intensive development of the existing urban centres of Caerphilly, Cardiff and Newport - areas which are capable of being served by conventional public transport.
